You raise some important questions, Elise. Are we as free in our free countries as we like to think? (I think about this particularly when I see the machine-gun toting police at Gatwick.) No one is threatening to murder us in the street for insulting Britishness at least.

As for every fiction writer having to live out their multiple personalities, this must be true. How else would we "fully imagine" what goes onto the page (to borrow a phrase from Colm Toibin). But all writers must do this to some extent, and business writers more than most. Otherwise there would be no hope of writing like Boots, Innocent or BA. Readers know second-rate ventriloquism when they see it.
